Roofing Tips: How to Install a New Roof on Your House
The roofing install process is a fairly easy one and with the proper materials and tools, you should have no issue. Some people may think that they can just climb onto their roof with their trowel and install a new roof, but in all actuality, most roofing shingles are very heavy, especially if they are asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles are not the easiest to work with, especially for someone who is not used to working with them. But, if you have the right tools and if you follow the instructions, you should be able to install your own roof.
The first step is to remove the old roof. In most cases, you will need to get permission from the previous roofing company before removing the shingles, as some states have restrictions on removing asphalt shingles. Once you have gotten permission, remove all of the nails that were holding it to the roof, as well as the ones in the valleys. Take note, though, that if you have an aluminum or wood shake, you will most likely need to buy replacement shingles before you can start putting them up.
Next, find all of the nails that were used to attach the previous roof to the building. You will probably have to remove all of them to make room for the new roof, and then put those nails in a box so that you won’t put them back in later. You can also buy roofing nailers, which you probably already have. Take them to the site and pre-heat them while they are hot so that you don’t damage anything when you are taking them apart.
Once the nails have been heated and you are sure that they are ready, use a hammer to pound them in place until you are satisfied that they are secure. If there were any nails that were damaged or broken, take those out as well and replace them with new ones. You can usually just replace the missing roofing nails by reusing some of the old ones. This ensures that your new roof will be completely secure, and that no one will be able to get into your roof in the future.
Once the nails are in place, you can begin to install the shingles. Again, you should preheat these before you start so that you won’t hurt yourself. Shingles are installed one at a time, so you have to measure the roof so that you know how many panels you will need to cover your roof. Cut the old roofing shingles so that you will be able to fit the panels to the space under the old ones. Attach them carefully, using roofing screws that have been pre-prepared.
Once you are finished, clean up debris around the site. Once the shingles have been attached, you can cover the entire roof with roofing tar to give it an even protection. However, you have to make sure that you are working on a level surface. Then repeat the installation process for the second panel until you are done with the entire roof. Repeat the process for the third panel and then the fourth panel, and so on until you are finished with the entire roofing project.
